Bratislava
The Slovak capital city is an acquired taste, at least for me. Located on the doorstep of both Austria and Hungary, Bratislava is a mishmash of architectural styles, reflecting the different regimes and traditions the city and its inhabitants have lived through. The Danube runs right through the city, offering a break from the narrow alleyways and heavily trafficked roads that twist through the city center. Bratislava is small for a capital city (population a little under 500,000), but it has a progressive, creative and alternative vibe that I find invigorating when I find myself passing through town.
